weather.b3rt.dev is the empire's working ledger for mountain weather in the North Carolina High Country. From the Blue Ridge Escarpment east of Asheville to the Roan Highlands on the Tennessee line, the ridge tops live under two air masses at once: the Piedmont warm sector below and the cold Northwest flow above. The ledger tracks what that collision does — ice storms, the wedge, fog on the Parkway, the four-season rhythm, RAWS and Mesonet stations, school-closure thresholds, and the folklore the locals still half-trust.
The Blue Ridge microclimate
The High Country is not a single weather regime. It is three stacked regimes, each with its own lapse rate, its own dewpoint, and its own sense of which way the wind ought to be blowing. The Piedmont forecast you read in the morning paper applies to the foot of the Escarpment and to nothing above it.
Elevation cooling in the southern Appalachians averages 3.5°F per thousand feet in summer and 2.5°F per thousand feet in winter. The number varies day to day, but the rule that Boone runs 12–15°F cooler than Charlotte on the same calendar day is reliable enough to plan a drive on.
Four-season patterns
The High Country has four real seasons and a fifth that doesn't get a name — the eight-week mud-and-frost window between "second winter" and "real spring." The ledger below tracks what each one does to the roads, the trails, and the school calendar.
The Appalachian wedge & ice storms
Two phenomena, one cold-pool physics. The wedge is the most reliable winter setup east of the Rockies; ice storms are what happens when the wedge loses its grip. Both are driven by cold air damming against the Escarpment.
The classic wedge forms when high pressure builds over New England and drives cold air south along the Atlantic seaboard. The cold pool gets pinched against the Blue Ridge Escarpment and stacks vertically, sometimes 3,000–5,000 ft deep, while warm moist air rides over from the southwest. The result is a layered atmosphere: snow at the ridge tops, freezing rain on the Plateau, cold rain at the foot of the Escarpment. Wedges can hold for 24–72 hours and are the standard setup for multi-county winter weather advisories.
When the warm nose above the cold pool gets thick enough — typically a 2,000–4,000 ft layer above freezing aloft — snow falling from the cloud melts on the way down, then refreezes on contact with surfaces below 32°F. That is the textbook ice storm. The High Country averages 2.4 ice events per season at 3,500 ft; the December 2002 storm dropped 1.5–2 inches of radial ice on the Boone area and took out power to 80% of Watauga County for five to fourteen days.
Snow totals & record highs
The snow record for the High Country is held by Mount Mitchell, but the operational record that matters for residents is at Boone and Banner Elk. Both run around 35 inches per winter; the variability between years is the headline.

Annual means are 1991–2020 normals where available; record storm totals are single-event NWS verification. RAWS stations do not measure snowfall reliably because the heated tipping bucket melts the catch.
The single largest snowstorm in High Country history was the March 1993 Superstorm, which dropped 24–36 inches across the Plateau and 60+ on the high ridges in under 24 hours. Boone was effectively shut down for four days; the BRP was closed for the entire length in North Carolina for the first time in modern record.
Fog & visibility on the BRP
The Blue Ridge Parkway averages 85–110 days of fog per year at elevations above 3,500 ft. Visibility below a quarter mile is common in cloud immersion at the ridge tops; the BRP closes individual sections for visibility far more often than for snow.
Two fog regimes matter. Advection fog forms when warm moist air blows across a colder surface — the standard setup after a cold front. This is the classic "Parkway fog" photo: low cloud deck rolling over the ridge while the valley is clear. Upslope fog forms when wind blows moist air up the Escarpment, condenses, and decks in. It can sit for 12–24 hours and is the more dangerous of the two for drivers.
The BRP's worst visibility corridor is the 18 miles between US 221 at Linville and NC 181 at Gillespie Gap — the ridgeline crosses four knobs above 4,200 ft, and any south or southwest flow decks the road in within an hour. The same corridor logs the highest rate of single-vehicle accidents in the BRP system. The NC ZONE from NWS Greenville-Spartanburg calls these "mountain fog" advisories with quarter-mile visibility; when those are up, do not plan a sunrise drive above 4,000 ft.
Wildfire season
Fire season in the southern Appalachians runs October through April — the opposite of the West. Fuels cure under fall drought, leaf litter dries, and any ignition source can run a hundred acres before the first truck arrives.
The High Country's two reference fires for size and behavior are the 2016 Pinnacle Mountain Fire (Watauga, 1,200 acres, two weeks to contain) and the November 2016 Party Rock Fire (Rutherford, 7,000 acres, ten days). Both were fall drought events with sustained 20–30 mph ridge-top winds; both escaped initial attack. The doctrine encoded after them: in fall drought, treat any report of smoke above the ridge as a hundred-acre fire until proven otherwise.
NOAA NWS coverage & station network
The High Country falls under two NWS Weather Forecast Offices. Watauga, Avery, Ashe, and Alleghany counties are covered by NWS Blacksburg (RNK) in Virginia; Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Swain, Haywood, and Madison counties are covered by NWS Greenville-Spartanburg (GSP). The county-by-county ZONE forecast is the legal forecast for your location.
The ZONE forecast product (text "FPUS" issued by each WFO) is the authoritative forecast for emergency management and for school-closure decisions. The point-and-click forecast on weather.gov is generated from the same ZONE but interpolated to your lat/lon — for mountain locations the interpolation often misses the elevation effect. Read the ZONE for the county you are in.

Three towns, three climates, all within 100 miles. The 1991–2020 climate normals make the differences explicit. The school-closure thresholds below are the operational decision rules used by Watauga County Schools and Avery County Schools.

1991–2020 normals from NCEI. Elevation differences explain most of the column-to-column variation; latitude is identical. Banner Elk runs cooler than Boone because it sits 500 ft higher and is more exposed to north flow.
Driving safety, prep & folklore
The three High Country corridors that close in bad weather are the BRP, US 421, and NC 226. Each has a different failure mode. The winter prep checklist below is the working list used by local fire and EMS; the folklore at the end is the half-truth the locals still pass around.
Corridor failure modes
BRP (mileposts 290–469 in NC). Closes for ice, snow, fog. The highest closure rate is between Linville (MP 317) and Crabtree (MP 340), crossing four knobs above 4,200 ft. Closures post on nps.gov/blri; the road is not plowed at night.
US 421. Four-lane Boone–Wilkesboro plus two-lane Boone–Mountain City, TN. The Vilas to Trade, TN gap is the highest-elevation stretch and ices first; wrecks in snow are routine.
NC 226. Two-lane Marion–Bakersville via Gillespie Gap. Steep grades, no shoulders, frequent fog. Closes for ice and snow 4–6 times per winter.

Weather folklore
"Fog up from the valley, good weather; fog down from the mountain, rain." Reliable in summer, inverted in winter (mountain fog = warm moist air damming into cold air below). "A circle around the moon means a storm is coming." Cirrostratus ice cloud preceding a warm front; ~70% reliable within 24 hours. "Thunder in January means snow within ten days." ~60% reliable — the cold front that brings thunder reloads with overrunning moisture within the week. "March comes in like a lion." True here: March is the snowiest month on average at most Plateau stations.
