The ten cascades a visitor should plan around if they only have a single long weekend.

  1. 01Linville FallsBurke / Avery. The four-tiered staircase where the Linville River punches through the gorge rim. 150 feet of drop, two developed overlooks, a wilderness spur to the base. The most-visited cascade in the High Country; arrive before 9 a.m. or take the wilderness spur.
  2. 02Crabtree FallsMitchell / Yancey. A 70-foot slide at parkway milepost 339.5, reached by a 2.5-mile loop through cove hardwood forest. Best in late April when the trillium is out and the rhododendron begins.
  3. 03Looking Glass FallsTransylvania. A 60-foot free-fall on the Pisgah Forest scenic byway; visible from the road, accessible via a paved path to a viewing platform. The most dramatic roadside cascade in the southern Blue Ridge.
  4. 04Triple FallsTransylvania. A three-tiered slide on the Little River in DuPont State Recreational Forest, with a 2.4-mile loop that also passes High Falls. The signature image of the forest.
  5. 05Dry FallsMacon. A 75-foot free-fall on the Cullasaja River with a walkway behind the cascade. US 64 runs over the top; the footpath slips behind the sheet of water.
  6. 06Bridal Veil FallsMacon. A 120-foot cascade on US 64 between Franklin and Highlands; the only waterfall in North Carolina a vehicle can drive behind. Open year-round.
  7. 07Tom Branch FallsSwain. The opening cascade of the Deep Creek loop in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a 35-foot slide. The most efficient cascade hike in the Smokies.
  8. 08Elk River FallsAvery. The best roadside cascade in the immediate Newland area. A 50-foot slide with a 0.4-mile trail from a small parking area. Cold swimming hole year-round.
  9. 09Hebron FallsWatauga. A 35-foot cascade on a tributary of the South Fork of the New River, reached by a 1.5-mile out-and-back into a laurel-and-rhododendron gorge. Local trail; only signage is at the trailhead.
  10. 10The CascadesWatauga, BRP. A 60-foot series of drops on Stony Fork off the parkway at milepost 320. The 0.6-mile loop is paved and wheelchair-accessible to the lower overlook. The best family cascade.

The science of the falling water

How the cascades of the Blue Ridge formed, why they keep flowing, and what controls the seasonal volume.

The cascades of the North Carolina High Country are the product of three geological processes. The rock is old — the gneiss and schist of the Blue Ridge basement dates to the Proterozoic — but the canyons are young, cut in the last 15 million years as the Appalachians uplifted. Every stream falls a long way in a short distance, and the rock resists undercutting.

The Blue Ridge is also one of the wettest parts of the eastern United States. The crest receives 60 to 80 inches of precipitation a year, much of it orographic rainfall driven up from the Gulf. The springs that feed the New, Watauga, Elk, and Linville rivers run year-round at temperatures in the high 40s, even in August. Spring-fed cascades hold volume through a summer drought; rain-fed cascades can go dry by mid-July.

Spring snowmelt and spring rain deliver the highest volume from March through early June. Tropical remnants deliver a second peak in September and early October. The lowest flow is mid-July through mid-September. A snowmelt-fed cascade at peak in April is a different spectacle than the same cascade in September; both are worth seeing.

Rock type matters more than most visitors realize. Quartzite, granite, and the harder gneisses hold a sharp lip for decades; schists and phyllites round off in years. Crabtree and Triple Falls hold their shape because they sit on quartzite; the South Toe cascades are short and slide-like because the rock is phyllite. The BRP cascades in Watauga are short and frequent because the parkway crosses the strike at right angles; the Cullasaja gorge cascades are tall and few because the road runs along the strike.

Did you know

The Linville River falls 1,200 feet in the first two miles after it enters the gorge — an average gradient of 12 percent. That gradient is what makes the gorge uncrossable except at the headwaters; it is also what makes the four named cascades possible.

Safety and swimming advisories

The cascades that have killed people, the cascades that close to swimming, and the patterns that make falls dangerous.

Waterfall fatalities in the southern Appalachians follow a consistent pattern. The victim climbs the rock face to the side of the cascade, slips on the wet surface, and falls into the pool. The rock at the lip and immediately below is undercut by the same hydraulic action that carved the cascade. The most common contributing factor is alcohol; the second is climbing alone. Stay on the marked trail.

The cascades below are closed to swimming or have a documented fatality. When in doubt, ask the local ranger district before entering the pool.

Linville Falls — Plunge Basin

Closed to swimming. Three fatalities since 2018. The hydraulics recirculate and hold a body under.

Looking Glass Falls

Closed to swimming. Three fatalities since 2015. The slide from the overlook is mossy and the rock face is undercut.

Triple Falls — second tier

Closed to swimming. One fatality since 2020. Recirculating hydraulics at the base of the second tier.

Dry Falls

Pool closed to swimming. The walkway-behind feature is safe; the rock face below the lip is undercut.

Hooker Falls (DuPont)

Open to swimming. Deep pool, gentle current, short slide. Arrive before 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m.

Elk River Falls

Open at your own risk. Deep pool, water in the high 40s year-round, slick slide. The best legal swimming hole in Avery County.

Cascades that are safe to view but unsafe to enter share three characteristics: a hard-rock lip with a sharp edge, an undercut rock face below the lip, and a deep pool. The combination creates the recirculating current that holds a body under. Treat every cascade with the caution the rock demands.

The cascades that the trail guides underplay. None require a Class 3 scramble; all require that the visitor be willing to leave the parkway.

Avery County · off SR 1305 north of Banner Elk

Mill Creek Falls

Drop40 ft Trail0.6 mi RT Class1

The best unpublicized cascade in the immediate Newland area. A 40-foot slide on Mill Creek where it crosses SR 1305 a mile north of the Elk River crossing. The trail begins at a gate on the south side of the road and follows an old road grade upstream to the base. The trail is local and is not marked; ask at the filling station in Banner Elk. Best March through June.

Punch Bowl Falls

A 20-foot cascade that drops into a circular granite bowl, named for the shape of the basin. The trail descends 400 vertical feet from the ridge to the bowl; the climb back is steep in the final 0.4 miles. Open to swimming at your own risk; the water is spring-fed and in the high 40s. On private land; ask at the Bakersville general store for permission and conditions.

Long Creek Falls

A 30-foot cascade on Long Creek, a tributary of Wilson Creek in the National Wild and Scenic River corridor. The trail follows an old railroad grade upstream; the last 0.2 miles is overgrown in summer. Best April and May before the canopy closes in. Trailhead south of Edgemont on SR 1344.

Ashe County · off SR 1624 west of West Jefferson

Dog Creek Falls

A 30-foot cascade on Dog Creek where it descends off the flank of Mount Jefferson. Trail begins at the end of SR 1624 and follows the creek upstream; the cascade is 0.6 miles in. The trail is local and not marked; the lot holds 4 cars. Best March through May when the flow is highest; freezes occasionally in winter.

Photography & field craft

How to come back with a photograph that is not a snapshot of the parking lot.

The cascade is the easy part of the photograph. Water blurs at slow shutter speeds and freezes at fast ones; the same cascade at 1/15s is a sheet of silk and at 1/1000s is static glass. The default for editorial landscape work is 1/4s to 1/15s with a tripod and polarizer; the default for action is 1/250s to 1/1000s, handholdable. The cascade's setting wants f/8 to f/11 for depth; the cascade's environment wants f/4 to f/5.6 for atmosphere.

Light is best in the first two hours after sunrise and the last two hours before sunset, when the sun is low and the rock face is in side-light. Midday delivers flat light — shoot the pool and reflection, not the cascade. Overcast delivers the best mid-cascade detail because the dynamic range is compressed. The worst light is hard midday sun on a quartzite slab.

The composition that works at almost every cascade is foreground wet rock, midground falling water, background cove canopy. The lens that captures this is a 24-70mm at the wide end. The lens that captures the cascade alone is a 70-200mm at the long end. Both have their place; neither is sufficient alone.

Field note

Tripods are required at most cascade overlooks for the long exposures that turn water into silk. They are not required on the side trip to the cascade's base if the trail is steep and rocky. Bring a tripod only if the trail will let you use it.

The kit list

What to carry for a full day of cascade work in the High Country.

Footwear

Trail runners or low hikers

Grip is the primary requirement. The rock at every overlook is wet and the trail to every base is rocky. A low hiker with a vibram sole is the right tool; a high boot is not.

Layers

Synthetic base + fleece + shell

The temperature at the cascade base is 10 to 15 degrees cooler than the parking lot; the spray at the lip is continuous. Synthetic base layers dry fast; cotton does not.

Traction

Microspikes (Nov–Mar)

The trails to the bases are steep and rocky and freeze in winter. Microspikes fit over trail runners and deliver the grip the rock demands.

Water

2 L minimum, 3 in summer

Humidity at the base is high, temperature is low, and the body does not register the dehydration. Drink before the hike and at every overlook.

Light

Headlamp + spare batteries

Trails to the bases are often in shadow by 4 p.m. in shoulder season. A headlamp is the difference between a slow walk out and a slow crawl.

Paper

USFS quad + paper map

Cell service is unreliable at every cascade base in the High Country. A paper map is the difference between finding the trailhead and walking the road for an hour.

Optics

The two-lens kit that covers every cascade in the ledger. The 24-70mm captures the foreground-to-background composition; the 70-200mm captures the cascade alone.

Support

Carbon tripod + L-bracket

Required at the overlook for the 1/4s exposure that turns water into silk. Carbon is light enough to carry on the descent; aluminum is not.

Filter

Polarizer + 6-stop ND

The polarizer cuts the glare on the pool and wet rock; the 6-stop ND lets you shoot the 1/4s exposure in midday light.

Field notes

The pattern observations that the trail guides underplay and the locals repeat.

Volume pattern

Spring-fed cascades hold their volume through a summer drought; rain-fed cascades do not. The depth of the pool at the base is the best indicator: spring-fed cascades have a deep, clear pool; rain-fed cascades have a shallow, rocky pool.

Season pattern

The cascades are at their peak flow from late March through early June. They are at their peak photography from late September through mid-October, when the canopy turns and the crowds thin. The two windows rarely overlap.

Parking pattern

Lots at the named cascades fill by 10 a.m. on a peak fall weekend and by 11 a.m. on a peak summer weekend. The visitor who arrives at noon is not seeing the cascade; the visitor is seeing the parking lot. Arrive before 8 a.m. or after 4 p.m.

Crowd pattern

Cascades on the Blue Ridge Parkway and in DuPont are the most crowded. Cascades off the parkway and out of DuPont are the least crowded. The visitor who wants the cascade alone should leave the parkway at the first opportunity.

Rock pattern

Cascades on quartzite and granite hold a sharp lip and a reliable shape; cascades on schist and phyllite round off and shift. Quartzite is white to grey; schist is dark grey to silver; phyllite is dark with a sheen.

Swimming advisories are derived from closure signage at the developed cascades and documented fatality patterns at the undeveloped. The rock at the lip of every cascade is undercut; treat every cascade with the caution the rock demands.

Local knowledge comes from a decade of conversations with the Banner Elk filling station attendants, the Bakersville general store clerks, the Edgemont postmasters, and the West Jefferson librarians. The High Country runs on word of mouth; the maps are a starting point and the locals are the guide.
