fern.b3rt.dev is the empire's editorial ledger on ferns and native plants of the North Carolina High Country. The southern Appalachians are a fern biodiversity hotspot — fifty-three species within an hour of Newland — and the elevation gradient from the Linville gorge floor at 1,200 feet to the Roan balds at 6,285 feet compresses six climatic zones into twenty miles of ridge. The entries below trace the habitats, the ferns themselves, the heath balds, the wildflowers and mosses, the fiddlehead harvest, the gardening tradition, and the trails that close the ledger.

Habitats — nine to know

The High Country's botanical richness comes from the layering of nine distinct habitats in close proximity. Most native plant species are habitat-specific; learning the habitats is learning the plants.

Linville Gorge · 1,200–2,400 ft

The gorge floor — rich mesic forest

The Linville Gorge floor is the botanical heart of the High Country. The microclimate is cool, moist, and stable; the canopy is closed enough that direct sun rarely reaches the forest floor; the soil is deep loam over limestone and amphibolite. The result is a southern Appalachian rich mesic forest that holds the largest concentration of fern species in the region.

Walking fern (Asplenium rhizophyllum) clings to the limestone outcrops near the river. Maidenhair (Adiantum pedatum) and ebony spleenwort (Asplenium platyneuron) line the streamside banks. Rattlesnake fern (Botrychium virginianum) carpets the lower slopes. The gorge floor is wilderness and access is by foot only; the trails in are steep and the descent is 1,200 vertical feet from the rim.

The Linville Gorge is wilderness. No collecting, no campfires, no off-trail. The trails in (the Spence Ridge trail, the Pinch-in trail, the Babel Creek trail) are all difficult; allow 3–4 hours for the descent. The gorge floor is the slowest SAR response area in the High Country.

The Roan high bald is the High Country's most distinctive botanical habitat. Above 5,800 feet, the spruce-fir forest gives way to a 30-acre grassy bald that has been cleared of trees by natural processes (heavy winter ice, shallow soils, and a long history of summer grazing by elk and bison before the extirpation of both). The bald supports a sub-alpine meadow flora that is found nowhere else in the eastern United States.

The fern count on the high bald is small (the conditions are too exposed for most ferns) but the surrounding spruce-fir fringe holds a different suite — intermediate shield fern, northernlady fern, and the rare mountain spleenwort. The Catawba rhododendron (Rhododendron catawbiense) dominates the heath bald fringe around the meadow and peaks in mid-June. The Roan is reached by the one-mile paved trail from the Carver's Gap parking lot; the high bald itself is fragile and off-trail foot travel is discouraged.

The Roan high bald is monitored and the soil is fragile. Stay on the marked trail around the perimeter of the meadow. The peak is above 6,000 feet and weather shifts fast; the temperature can drop 30 degrees in an hour when a cold front passes. The spruce-fir forest surrounding the bald is dying from the balsam woolly adelgid; expect to see dead and dying trees.

The acidic cove — heath-dominated slope

The acidic cove forest is the High Country's signature hardwood habitat. The slopes are steeper than the rich cove forests at lower elevation, the soil is thinner and more acidic, and the canopy is more open. Mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) and rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum) form an understory layer that blooms in May and June; the ground layer is dominated by ferns and galax.

The fern assemblage includes Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides), hay-scented fern (Dennstaedtia punctilobula), New York fern (Parathelypteris noveboracensis), and the galax groundcover (Galax urceolata) that carpets the slopes in solid green. The acidic cove is the easiest habitat to walk; the trails are gentle, the views are open, and the plant diversity is high enough that a half-day walk produces a notebook full of species.

The acidic cove is deer-browse habitat. Many of the native wildflowers (trillium, bloodroot, lady's slipper) are declining because of over-browsing. Stay on the marked trails; off-trail foot travel crushes the galax mats and they recover slowly.

Twelve ferns worth knowing

The High Country's twelve most commonly encountered ferns, ordered by habitat. Identification is by frond shape, sori position, and habitat — the same three keys the field guides use.

Christmas fernPolystichum acrostichoides
The High Country's most common evergreen fern. Leathery, once-pinnate fronds with a stocking-shaped pinna at the base. The sori are arranged in rows on the upper pinnae and ripen through the year. Found in every habitat from the rich cove forest to the acidic cove; one of the few ferns that grows well in dry shade. The name comes from the evergreen habit; the fronds are sold as Christmas greenery.
Royal fernOsmunda spectabilis
The big fern of the wet meadows. Osmunda is one of the oldest fern genera and the royal fern is its largest High Country representative — fronds can reach five feet in good conditions. The fertile fronds are distinct, with a separate pinna at the tip that carries the sporangia; the visual difference between sterile and fertile fronds is the name's origin. Wet meadows, seeps, and streamsides.
Cinnamon fernOsmunda cinnamomea
The cinnamon-stick fern. The fertile fronds are entirely separate, vertical, and covered in cinnamon-brown sporangia — the color and the texture give the name. Sterile fronds are similar to royal fern but the pinnae are more deeply cut. Grows in the same wet habitats as royal fern; the two are often found together. The fiddleheads are edible and harvested commercially in the spring.
Interrupted fernOsmunda claytoniana
The fern with the gap in the middle. The fertile fronds have one or two pairs of fertile pinnae set midway up the frond — the dark brown sporangia interrupt the green sterile pinnae above and below. The visual interruption is the name. Same wet habitat as royal and cinnamon; the three Osmundas often grow together in the same colony.
Maidenhair fernAdiantum pedatum
The High Country's most elegant fern. The frond divides into a horseshoe shape at the top of the stipe, with the pinnae radiating horizontally from the arc. The black stipe is the diagnostic feature — no other High Country fern has a black wiry stem. Rich, moist soil; the Linville gorge floor and the north-facing slopes above 3,000 feet are the best sites. The fiddleheads are tightly coiled and edible.
Lady fernAthyrium asplenioides
The High Country's most common deciduous fern. The fronds are twice-pinnate, lacy, and yellow-green; the sori are on the underside of the pinnae in curved lines that follow the vein pattern. Grows in every moist habitat from the cove forests to the open meadows; one of the most adaptable ferns. The fiddleheads are the standard edible fiddlehead of the spring markets.
Hay-scented fernDennstaedtia punctilobula
The meadow fern. The fronds are lacy, twice-pinnate, and yellow-green; the crushed pinnae smell of fresh-cut hay — the diagnostic feature. Grows in open meadows, road cuts, and forest edges; forms large colonies that exclude other plants. The aggressive rhizome makes it a dominant species in disturbed acidic habitats. Hay-scented fern is the only High Country fern that smells like anything.
Walking fernAsplenium rhizophyllum
The cliff fern that walks. The simple, undivided fronds taper to a tip that roots where it touches the rock — the new plant then sends out more walking tips, and the colony slowly migrates across the cliff face. Found only on limestone or other calcareous rock; the Linville gorge floor is the High Country's best site. A rare fern globally and one of the reasons the Linville gorge is botanically significant.
Ebony spleenwortAsplenium platyneuron
The small spleenwort. Once-pinnate fronds with a dark brown (ebony) stipe and rachis; the pinnae are alternate and the sori are arranged in pairs on the underside. Grows in rock crevices, road cuts, and the base of trees; one of the most common spleenworts in the eastern US. The Linville gorge has a population of the closely-known maidenhair spleenwort (A. trichomanes) as well.
Filmy fernHymenophyllum tunbrigense
The translucent fern. The frond is one cell thick — light passes through the tissue and the fern appears translucent in the right light. Found only on the most sheltered, consistently moist rock faces in the High Country; the Linville gorge has one of the few inland populations in the US. A globally rare fern and the High Country's most botanically significant species.
Chain fernWoodwardia areolata
The net-veined fern. The fronds are once-pinnate with net-veined pinnae and long, chain-like sori that run perpendicular to the midvein — the diagnostic feature. Wet, acidic soil in seeps and along streams; the Linville gorge and the Watauga river bottoms are the best sites. The closely-known Virginia chain fern (W. virginica) grows in similar habitats.
Rattlesnake fernBotrychium virginianum
The single-leaf fern. The frond divides into a sterile leafy blade and a separate fertile spike that carries the sporangia — the visual division is the name. The fertile spike resembles a rattlesnake's rattle before the sporangia ripen. Found in the rich cove forest and on the lower slopes; one of the few ferns that grows in deep shade. The closely-known cut-leaved grape fern (B. dissectum) grows in similar habitats.
Did you know

The High Country's filmy fern (Hymenophyllum tunbrigense) is one of only two inland populations in the continental United States; the species is normally restricted to coastal rainforests. The Linville gorge population survives because the cliff faces retain moisture and the microclimate stays cool year-round.

Heath balds & shrublands

The High Country's heath balds are the most floristically distinctive plant communities in the eastern US. Three named balds, each with a different dominant species.

A heath bald is a high-elevation plant community dominated by woody shrubs in the heath family (Ericaceae) rather than by trees. The High Country's balds form where shallow soil, heavy winter ice, and a long history of disturbance prevent forest establishment. The three named balds are each dominated by a single species.

Roan high baldMitchell County · 30 acres
The Catawba rhododendron (Rhododendron catawbiense) dominates the shrub layer around the perimeter of the grassy bald. The peak bloom is mid-June; the flowers are pale pink to lavender and the display is one of the most photographed wildflower events in the eastern US. The bald itself is grass-dominated; the rhododendron is the framing species on the spruce-fir fringe.
Round Bald & Jane BaldRoan Mountain · grassy
Two adjacent grassy balds that are dominated by grasses and sedges rather than shrubs. The wildflower display is different from the Roan high bald — gray goldenrod (Solidago nemoralis), mountain mint, and a dozen grass species that form the bald's turf. The balds are heavily grazed by elk herds re-introduced in the 2000s.
Craggy GardensBlue Ridge Parkway · 5,500 ft
A Catawba rhododendron bald on the south-facing slope of the Craggy Mountains. Smaller than the Roan but more accessible — the Craggy Gardens trail is a one-mile paved loop from the BRP visitor center. The bloom is mid-June; the display is similar to the Roan but compressed into a smaller area. The understory includes flame azalea (Rhododendron calendulaceum) which blooms in late May.
Flat Top MountainWatauga County · private
A flame azalea bald on the north end of the High Country. The mountain's summit is a private inholding but the BRP overlooks provide good views of the bloom in late May. The flame azalea is the dominant species; Catawba rhododendron is present but not dominant.
Did you know

The Roan high bald was historically maintained by elk grazing and by natural ice storms. After the elk were extirpated in the early 1800s, the bald would have slowly reforested except for the ongoing ice damage and the shallow soil. The reintroduction of elk to the Roan in 2001 restored one of the original ecological processes; the bald's grass community has been measurably more vigorous since the elk returned.

The High Country's wildflower calendar runs from the first hepatica in late February to the last gentian in late October. Nine species worth watching for.

Bloom dates are typical mid-elevation (3,500–4,500 ft) timing; lower-elevation sites bloom earlier, higher sites later. A warm March can advance the hepatica by two weeks; a late frost can delay the rhododendron by the same.

Did you know

The High Country's wildflower diversity is concentrated in the cove forests, not on the high balds. A single rich cove forest at 3,000 feet will hold more plant species than ten acres of open meadow. The reason is habitat heterogeneity — the layered canopy creates different light, moisture, and temperature conditions that allow dozens of species to coexist on the same slope.

Mosses, liverworts, lichens

The High Country's bryophyte and lichen flora is more species-rich than the vascular plant flora. The cool, moist habitats support species found nowhere else in the Southeast.

The bryophyte flora (mosses and liverworts) is one of the High Country's quiet treasures. The cool, consistently moist habitats on the north-facing slopes and in the deep gorges support a diversity of bryophytes that exceeds the vascular plant list by a factor of two. The lichen flora is similarly rich on the exposed rock faces and the high-elevation spruce-fir.

Did you know

The Mountain Lake bog in the Linville gorge is one of the few Southern Appalachian sphagnum bogs and supports a relict flora from the last ice age. The bog's plant list includes species normally found 800 miles north, including the boreal sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) and the mountain cranberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea).

Fiddleheads — the spring harvest

The coiled young fronds of certain ferns are edible and are a spring delicacy across the High Country. The harvest window is short and the species identification is critical — some fern fiddleheads are toxic.

Edible species

Three ferns produce fiddleheads that are safe to harvest and eat. Ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris) is the standard commercial fiddlehead — the fiddleheads are tightly coiled, have a deep U-shaped groove on the smooth stem, and grow in clumps in the rich cove forest. Cinnamon fern (Osmunda cinnamomea) produces edible fiddleheads with a cinnamon-colored wool on the young fronds. Royal fern (Osmunda spectabilis) produces edible fiddleheads without the wool. Lady fern (Athyrium asplenioides) fiddleheads are widely eaten but can cause gastric upset in sensitive individuals.

Toxic species

Bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) fiddleheads are carcinogenic and should not be eaten in quantity. Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides) fiddleheads are mildly toxic. Hay-scented fern (Dennstaedtia punctilobula) fiddleheads are bitter and unpalatable. Most other ferns have not been tested and should not be eaten. The identification rules: harvest only from a known patch, identify to species, eat only the three Osmunda/Matteuccia species plus the Lady fern, cook thoroughly (10 minutes minimum boiling), and eat in moderation.

Harvest limits: take no more than half the fiddleheads from any single crown to allow regrowth. A crown needs at least 3–4 fronds to photosynthesize through the season; harvesting all of them kills the plant.

Did you know

The fiddlehead harvest on the Linville gorge floor is a spring tradition that predates European settlement. The Cherokee harvested the Osmunda fiddleheads by torchlight in the early spring, when the young fronds emerge through the leaf litter and are visible from a distance. The practice continues today on a small commercial scale.

Native plant gardening

Most High Country native plants grow well in the home garden if the soil and moisture are matched to the species. The rules are simpler than the catalog suggests.

The High Country's native plant gardening tradition is small but established. The key principle is to match the species to the soil and moisture conditions of the original habitat rather than the elevation. A Christmas fern from the rich cove forest will grow in a shady moist garden bed at 3,500 feet; it will not grow in a dry sunny bed. The plants are more adaptable to soil than to sun, but they are not infinitely adaptable.

Soil pH

The High Country's native plants fall into two pH groups. The acidic group (rhododendron, mountain laurel, galax, most ferns) wants a pH of 4.5 to 5.5; the rich group (bloodroot, trillium, hepatica, maidenhair) wants a pH of 6.0 to 7.0. Most residential soil in the High Country is naturally acidic; the rich group needs lime or wood ash amendments to lift the pH.

Source plants

Native plants should be sourced from nurseries that propagate their own stock rather than from wild collection. The High Country native plant nurseries are listed below; wild collection is illegal on state and federal land and is discouraged on private land. The nurseries ship regionally and most maintain retail stock through the spring and summer.

The trade-off is the higher shipping cost and the fact that the plants are sourced from New England rather than from southern Appalachian seed stock.

The annual spring plant sale at the NC Botanical Garden is the single best one-day opportunity to buy southern Appalachian natives. The sale is the first Saturday in May and draws 4,000 visitors. Specialty: regional seed-source ferns, sedges, and the rare species that the smaller nurseries don't carry.
Did you know

Galax (Galax urceolata) is one of the High Country's most commercially valuable native plants. The leaves are harvested for the floral industry and shipped worldwide for use in wreaths and arrangements. The harvest is managed by the US Forest Service under a permit system that limits the annual cut to a sustainable yield.

Trails for the botanist

Five trails that concentrate the High Country's botanical diversity into a manageable half-day walk. Each is paired with the species you should expect to see.

Roan high bald loopMitchell County · 1 mile paved
The single best wildflower trail in the eastern US. The paved loop around the Roan high bald crosses heath, sub-alpine meadow, and spruce-fir fringe in a single mile. Peak season is mid-June for the Catawba rhododendron bloom; late June for the sub-alpine wildflowers. Easy access from Carver's Gap parking; crowded in bloom season.
Craggy Gardens trailBlue Ridge Parkway · 1 mile loop
The most accessible Catawba rhododendron display. The paved loop from the Craggy Gardens visitor center crosses the south-facing bald at 5,500 feet; peak bloom is the third week of June. The trail is gentle and the views are long; expect crowds. Combine with the short hike to the summit of Craggy Knob for an additional 1.5 miles.
Linville gorge — Spence Ridge to the riverAvery / Burke line · 4 miles one-way
The botanically richest trail in the High Country. The Spence Ridge trail descends 1,800 vertical feet from the ridge to the Linville river and crosses every habitat from the acidic ridge top to the rich gorge floor. The fern diversity on the lower third is the highest in the region. Strenuous; allow 4 hours for the descent and 5 for the ascent.
Boone Fork trailWatauga County · 5 mile loop
The best walk through an acidic cove forest. The Boone Fork trail follows the creek from the Price Lake picnic area through a long stretch of undisturbed cove forest; the galax mats, the Christmas fern colonies, and the mountain laurel bloom are all visible from the trail. Easy walking; allow 3 hours for the loop.
Mountain Lake bog trailBurke County · 0.5 mile boardwalk
The High Country's only sphagnum bog. The boardwalk loop crosses a relict bog community with species found nowhere else in the Southeast — sundew, mountain cranberry, and the boreal sphagnum moss. Peak season is May through September; the bog is fragile and off-trail foot travel is prohibited. The boardwalk is fully accessible.

Lexicon — the close-out

The terms that close the ledger. None invented; all in working use in the High Country botanical community.

Fern morphology

Frond — the leaf of a fern, including the stipe (stem) and the blade (leafy portion). Pinna — one of the leaflets of a divided frond; twice-pinnate means the pinnae are themselves divided. Sorus (plural sori) — the cluster of sporangia on the underside of a fertile frond; the position and shape of the sori are a primary identification key. Stipe — the stalk of the frond below the blade. Rachis — the continuation of the stipe through the blade; the central axis of a divided frond.

Habitat

Rich cove forest — the high-diversity mesic habitat at lower elevations; deep soil, closed canopy, cool and moist. Acidic cove — the steeper-slope habitat dominated by mountain laurel, rhododendron, and galax. Heath bald — a high-elevation shrub-dominated community on shallow acidic soil. Sphagnum bog — a peat-forming wetland community dominated by sphagnum moss; relict from the last ice age in the High Country.

Conservation

Sensitive species — a designation by the US Forest Service for plants that are tracked but not formally listed; the filmy fern and walking fern are sensitive species in the Pisgah and Nantahala forests. Endemic — a species found nowhere else in the world; the High Country has three endemics (the Blue Ridge goldenrod, the Roan bluet, and the Spruce-fir moss spider is not a plant but is in the same conversation). Deer browse — the selective feeding pressure from over-abundant white-tailed deer that is the leading cause of native wildflower decline in the eastern US.

The word fern comes to English from the Old English fearn, from the Proto-Germanic farḥan, and is cognate with the Old Norse farn and the German Farn. The High Country's botanical Latin uses the same root: Pteridium (bracken fern) and Asplenium (spleenwort) both trace to Greek roots meaning “wing” and “spleen” respectively.
